A Centre that can hold

(revised) (again) (and again)

Where now the Hub that holds the earth on course?
Where the Orb round which our orbit goes?
Where the Eye from whence all seeing flows?
Where the Flame that gives growth vital force?

Good counsel gushes forth from clever minds
Reason voids all ills or so they say
Man ventures to contrive synthetic day
And science thrives but yet the world unwinds

Life pines away for want of potent light
Desire for wisdom hammers in the breast
The heart aspires to launch a primal quest
Grows stronger in its surety of flight
Cuts loose the crippling bonds of earthly claims
At last avows an unseen Beauty reigns
